Arby's Brings Back A Beloved Menu Item—But Only In Canada
People mourned when the Potato Cakes were discontinued at Arby's. Now they're (sort of) back.
People tend to get pretty upset when their favorite fast food items get taken away. So that's why when Arby's Potato Cakes were quietly discontinued in 2021, we understood the sentiment behind the collective groan across the internet. But thankfully, not everything that heads to the fast food graveyard is destined to stay at rest forever.
Sometimes discontinued menu items come back for a limited-time run, like the Enchirito at Taco Bell. Those beloved Potato Cakes from Arby's are part of a similar revival, but if you want to get your hands on them, you'll have to cross an international border to do so.
Why were Arby’s Potato Cakes discontinued?
In case you don't remember, Arby's Potato Cakes are those triangle-shaped cakes made of shredded potato, fried until the outside is a crispy golden brown and the insides are soft and pillowy. They're similar to the Hash Browns on the McDonald's breakfast menu.
Arby's Potato Cakes were discontinued in 2021 to make room for the new addition of crinkle-cut fries. Why you'd order anything but Arby's marvelous curly fries is beyond us, but Arby's apparently had some evidence that the crinkle fries would do well enough to replace an entire potato offering, so the Potato Cakes got the axe.
Arby’s Potato Cakes are returning in Canada
The news of Arby's Potato Cakes returning to the Canadian market was quietly tucked into a recent press release, alongside the announcement of other limited-time offers including a butterscotch milkshake and a BLT-inspired roast beef sandwich.
Vito Curalli, spokesperson for Arby's Canada, said in a press release, "Being in quick service industry for so long, I've never seen value, and unique limited time offerings like this before – all at one time. We are definitely proud to be able to provide Canadians with unique flavours and the return of fan favourites."
I inquired with Arby's Canada to see if the Potato Cakes would be a permanent addition to the menu, but for now, a representative told me, the cakes will only see a limited run. The other item returning to Arby's Canadian menu is the Cherry Turnover, though that's still available here in the United States.
There hasn't been any news about whether we'll be getting the Potato Cakes again in the U.S., but when we reached out to Arby's in 2021 for comment, the company sent us this teasing statement: "Although our Potato Cakes have been discontinued (for now), who's to say they're gone forever?"
We'll keep a close eye on the Arby's menu for you Potato Cakes enthusiasts out there. If our neighbors to the north will soon be biting into crispy fried spuds, there's got to be a glimmer of a chance that we will too someday.
