Wendy's Serves A Breakfast Burrito Now

The breakfast menu at Wendy's continues to evolve.

With yet another new item on the breakfast menu, Wendy's continues to focus on its morning crowd. Last summer, the chain debuted English muffin sandwiches, which might not dethrone the classic McDonald's McMuffin, but are still a bold way for Wendy's to shake things up. Its latest breakfast entree is another handheld option: a Breakfast Burrito, available now in select regions.

Wendy’s new Breakfast Burrito, explained

The new burrito will be available at 4,500 Wendy's locations nationwide, which is a pretty good chunk of the brand's roughly 7,150 U.S. restaurants. It's made with two freshly cracked eggs, six strips of applewood smoked bacon, seasoned potatoes, two slices of American cheese, and cheese sauce, all wrapped up in a flour tortilla. The burrito will also be served with a condiment on the side that, in my opinion, should be legally required of all breakfast burritos: hot sauce. In this case, each breakfast burrito comes with two Cholula hot sauce packets for those looking to perk it up.

Wendy's has confirmed to The Takeout that the new Breakfast Burrito only comes in a bacon variety. I had hoped for a sausage version, since sausage breakfast burritos are more my speed, but Wendy's prides itself on its bacon and apparently wants to showcase that ingredient more than anything. Maybe you can politely ask for the sausage substitution in person and see what happens. Heck, at that point, maybe you could even ask for them to put a scoop of sausage gravy in there, too.

A Wendy’s breakfast burrito was inevitable

The addition of a breakfast burrito to the Wendy's menu shouldn't come as a surprise. Wendy's replaced its grilled chicken sandwich with its Grilled Chicken Ranch Wrap last year, so every shop serving breakfast should already have tortillas on hand. It's only natural that the chain decided to repurpose them for morning service.

John Li, global vice president of culinary innovation at Wendy's said in the announcement, "Our newest breakfast innovation serves up all the best parts of Wendy's breakfast rolled up into one delicious burrito."

The closest fast food analogue to Wendy's new breakfast burrito that I can think of is Taco Bell's Grande Toasted Breakfast Burrito, which includes scrambled eggs, potatoes, bacon, three cheese blend, and tomatoes. Would a breakfast burrito from Wendy's pique your interest, or are you sticking with the Breakfast Baconator?
