Austin Bar Dresses Up As Moe's Tavern For Halloween, Complete With Duff And Squishees
Any old person can dress up for Halloween by spending five minutes writing "NOUN" on a T-shirt with a permanent marker (please don't steal my favorite lazy costume idea, thanks). It takes a lot more work to dress a building up for Halloween, but that's just what Nickel City has done. The Austin, Texas-based watering hole got gussied up as Moe's Tavern of The Simpsons, and it's delightful.
The "costume" includes window coverings that evoke the green-and-orange-diamond windows of Moe's, a letterboard featuring a different quote from the show every day, a themed (and Moe's-lookin') menu, a Krusty burger made by the bar's on-site food trailer, and bartenders wearing Moe's uniform of a button-down, a bow-tie, an apron, and a scowl.
Scroll through below.
About that menu: Patrons can, of course, order a Flaming Moe (less Kough Syrup), as well as an Mmmm....... Donuts shot, which pairs a pink sprinkle doughnut (from food truck Republic Donuts) with a pour of Grand Marnier creme de cacao and milk. And there are several options for Squishees (frozen cocktails), including a pumpkin spice frozen Irish Coffee. Their beer list is, ah, the same as always, but is now called the "Duff" section.
Nickel City isn't the first restaurant to attempt a sartorial/decor transformation. Chicago's Lula Cafe dressed up for 15 years, ending the tradition in 2014 with a quinceañera for the neighborhood. A Shake Shack cosplayed as Bob's Burgers during this year's San Diego Comic Con. And last year, arcade bar Replay (also in Chicago) dressed up its Lincoln Park location as... Moe's Tavern.
Cheers to Eater Austin for directing our attention to this most pleasant development, particularly in a week/month/year/era in which pleasant developments are in short supply. If you're in Austin and pay Moe's a visit, please share photos! If you're in Austin and don't visit, then a hearty d'oh! to you.
