Mayochup Catch-Up: New Condiment Headed To The States

Last week, we noted that Heinz had not only introduced a new mayonnaise, but also a mayo/ketchup combo halfheartedly portmanteau'd into Mayochup. Clunky name be damned, Heinz tweeted the announcement of Mayochup, which was being released in the Middle East. The Chicago- and Pittsburgh-based company said that if 500,000 voted "yes" in a tweet, it would ship Mayochup to the U.S.

The Chicago Tribune announces today that the tweet did indeed hit that benchmark, so the condiment mashup is on its way to the States. The Trib states, "Along with the votes, roughly 16,000 Twitter users commented, with many railing against the proposed 'mayochup' name and others against what they considered a sacrilegious mix." In fact, Heinz director of marketing Nicole Kulwicki tells the Trib: "That's why we're asking America to share their suggestions, to ensure our version of this delicious duo gets the name it deserves." Nothing comes to mind immediately, but it won't be hard to top "Mayochup." Unless it's "Ketchonnaise."

We have so many questions: Doesn't this combo already exist in Russian dressing form? Would Heinz really not have sent Mayochup here without all those tweet likes? Were all of those 500,000-odd people really that excited about Mayochup?

And finally: How damn hard is it to mix mayonnaise and ketchup together?
