Delicious, endangered salamander
In a news report reminiscent of Mr. Burns’ “See My Vest” bit, The Express reports on an endangered Chinese salamander that unfortunately tastes like chicken. This is funny for about half a minute before you realize this animal is on the brink of extinction, and is the world’s largest amphibian. Come on, let’s just eat actual chicken instead. [Kate Bernot]
Benevolent, paternal Labrador
In the good news part of our bad news/good news animal news day, meet Fred! He’s a 10-year-old Labrador retriever who adopted nine ducklings that were “abandoned by their mum” on the grounds of a castle in Essex, according to Suffolk Now. The little ducks have really taken to Fred, riding around on his back or following him to the moat for a quick dip. I kind of can’t get enough of this story, to be honest. Plus, they all get to live by a castle. [Gwen Ihnat]
