Harassment Over MAGA Hat Inspires Conservative Cheesecake Factory Boycott

On Mother's Day, 22-year-old Eugenior Joseph went to a Cheesecake Factory inside Dadeland Mall in Florida with his girlfriend and family. He happened to be wearing a Make America Great Again hat. Joseph was reportedly subsequently harassed by Cheesecake Factory employees. Conservative site The Daily Wire reports that Cheesecake Factory employees allegedly verbally attacked Joseph "and reportedly made threatening gestures toward him" because of his hat, according to multiple witnesses. Some employees allegedly pointed and laughed at his hat, according to witnesses, and then brought out more employees to gape at him. Joseph told the Daily Wire that "he was particularly scared of one employee who 'fist bumped' another coworker and 'started looking at me, balling his fists, smacking his fists, trying to scare me.'"

The incident has kicked off a #boycottcheesecakefactory campaign by some conservatives:

The Cheesecake Factory has pinned a statement to its Twitter page, saying that two staff members "are no longer employed with the company," and that the restaurant has "reached out to Mr. Joseph directly to ask for his assistance"—assistance in what, is unclear.

The Daily Wire reports, though, that Joseph says that "The Cheesecake Factory has not reached out to him and did not apologize to him in person after the alleged incident happened." The Daily Dot reports that The Cheesecake Factory also tweeted, "The situation may have been exacerbated by an all-staff meeting that took place during our shift change between our staff members working the lunch and dinner shifts—which may have been perceived as a crowd gathering near the guests' tables. We look forward to speaking with Mr. Joseph to welcome him back into one of our restaurants." Maybe don't hold your breath, Cheesecake Factory.
