McDonald's Double Big Mac Is Coming Back

Do you remember the limited-time Big Mac with twice as much beef?

It's the return of the Mac. The Double Big Mac, that is. McDonald's has announced that the Double Big Mac will be back on the menu for a limited time at participating locations nationwide starting on January 24.

What is the McDonald’s Double Big Mac?

The Double Big Mac is definitely a sandwich for larger appetites, because it's simply a Big Mac with twice as much beef: two hamburger patties on the bottom, then a piece of bread in the center, then two more patties on top of that. The cheese, lettuce, Big Mac sauce, onions, pickles, and sesame seed bun remain exactly the same, and their ratios aren't changed by the presence of extra meat.

If the Double Big Mac sounds familiar, that's because it was originally introduced to the U.S. market in March 2020—unfortunate timing for any product release, due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting restaurant dining room shutdowns. McDonald's weathered much of that year by pausing its innovations in favor of a trimmed-down (or "streamlined") menu, a strategy adopted by other fast food chains, too.

I didn't get to try the Double Big Mac the last time it came around, because I was as preoccupied, as the rest of the world was back then, with staying home. But I've got a suspicion that four all-beef patties might actually be too much, since the joy of a Big Mac lies partially in its precise balance of bread, meat, and sauce. I did enjoy the Grand Mac in 2018—but that was a Big Mac where every ingredient was enlarged, so its ratios remained unchanged.

How to get a McDonald’s Double Big Mac right now

If you're curious about how the Double Big Mac tastes, there's certainly nothing stopping you from ordering extra meat yourselves and tasting the results right now. It'll be interesting to see if McDonald's new process for cooking and assembling its burgers (along with its new brioche bun) will make a difference in the overall experience, but I'm assuming the main defining feature of the Double Big Mac is its sheer heftiness. There's no information on its pricing just yet.

We particularly liked the recent tweak of McDonald's adding more Big Mac sauce to every burger, because it offers a more indulgent (albeit messy) experience, but we'll have to see if the increased serving of sauce offsets the additional beef. How about you? Do you think the extra meat is too much, or do you think it'll benefit the Big Mac eating experience in any way?
