Costco undeniably stands as the giant of the supermarket world, with the largest being about 235,000 square feet. However, the Costco in Juneau, Alaska, is the smallest in the world.
The Juneau Costco was built in 1993. It has a 76,696 square feet warehouse, half the size of a regular Costco, and was a prototype — one of the few stores of its size.
Despite its size, the Juneau Costco is profitable, seeing a steady growth of 2% to 3% annually. It also only carries about 600 less products than a regular Costco.
Although it lacks a gas station and bakery, it still has a full booze department, a pharmacy, and a small food court. However, its hot pizzas and rotisserie chickens are absent.
